Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Because her father's departure the family, it was managed by her mother, grandmother and godparents. She suffered from an anxiety disorder that was rooted in word associations as a young teenager. Ford started acting in her teens, and was part of the National Youth Theatre. After being admitted at the Sylvia Young Theatre School for only a few days however, Ford realised that this was not the best place for her. Ford instead applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama, finally winning the position on her 4th application. Shaun Dingwall - who later was the character Pete Tyler in Doctor Who - was one of her fellow students. Ford earned her bachelor's degree in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut in Surgical Spirit in an episode in 1990. Ford took the professional title of Catherine Tate. Tate made appearances on television during the Nineties through shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. She worked on stage regularly as well as a part of The Royal Shakespeare Company's 2000-2001 season. Tate was recognized for her comedy stand-up that was added to her repertoire in the year 1996.
